Armando Christian Perez, also known as the rapper “Pitbull”, who also has a performing gig on the Vegas Strip at Planet Hollywood, is the face behind the Sports Leadership and Management (SLAM) Academy of Nevada.
“We’re making history. this is the second slam school in the United States of America, I want you to own that,” said the rapper in front of the school’s students. “I want you to understand how powerful this is going to be not only in the United States, but also all around the world.”
The school held its first official grand opening ceremony Friday.
“Like they say, ‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.’ And so what we’re doing here at SLAM is teaching you that there are no boundaries,” said the rapper.
SLAM is looking to change up how students across the country are taught in the classroom.
With a campus in Miami, and now in the Las Vegas area, SLAM students are able to take career-building lessons in sports medicine, sports marketing and entertainment or business and management.
So, how’s it working out so far? Slam seventh grader Amado Castellon chimed in.
“This school is just like a step to where you want to go. this school just shows you that you could do it,” said Castellon. “I want to be a businessman and like I want to start my own clothing line.”
As the school gets off to a strong start, the Miami-born rapper who also goes by Mr. 305 is using his star power to educate hundreds across the country, starting in the 702.
“They say the sky is the limit, right? nah. there’s footprints on the moon. we got to go past the sky.”
School organizers first broke ground last October, and as you can see less than a year later these students are in the classroom and ready to learn.
Currently, SLAM academy teaches students grades sixth through ninth but will increase in size with students through all of high school over the next few years.
